Vertebrate muscle contains a reservoir of high potential phosphate groups in the form of creatine phosphate (phosphocreatine). The abundance of creatine phosphate and its high phosphoryl transfer potential to that of ATP helps maintain high concentrations of ATP during periods of muscle exertion.
